Happy First Day of Spring, y’all!
OK, show of hands: how many of you instantly start feeling pressure in your sinuses just by looking at this picture? ‘Tis the season to start looking forward to longer days, warmer temperatures, greening grass, budding flowers… and for many of us, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and congestion. Also known as seasonal allergies. For those of us that suffer, the coming of Spring fills us with mixed emotions. While we all have Spring Fever this time of year, for some of us that “fever” part is quite literal.
So let’s talk about ALLERGIES, and how they impact our lives and workouts. Swollen nasal glands can make it difficult to breathe when just sitting at our desk, so we most definitely feel like we’re suffocating during our workouts! This physical struggle to breath is exhausting, especially coupled with the fact that we’re probably not receiving enough oxygen in the first place.
Then there are the itchy, red, watery eyes. Don’t you feel pretty?! All the sniffling of the snot, and the wiping of the eyes, makes us look like a real basket case! For those of you who don’t suffer from allergies, consider yourself #blessed. All the coughing, because your throat tickles… the hacking up of the phlegm. The days that we take off from the gym and call in sick to work are just lovely. Just kidding. It pretty much sucks.
So what do we do?! Sure, there are over the counter medicines that can help us treat our symptoms. Nasal sprays, inhalers, pills. And THANK GOD for these, otherwise how the heck would we survive?? But, is just treating the symptoms our best option? Is it possible to cure ourselves of our allergies, so we no longer have to suffer these symptoms?? And, what exactly does taking these meds daily over extended amounts of time doing to our bodies? In the name of health and wellness, we started researching our options here.
